replacing an engine

1997 Dodge Neon, 113000
We are looking into replacing the engine in my dad's car because repairing we are finding out will be over $1000. We figure going with a rebuilt or used engine might be better. What are the best ways to find a good rebuilt? Are used engines even worth looking at?

A used engine can be a lot cheaper but it's certainly a lot more risk. It's jjust a roll of the dice on those. Even with a gaurantee, you eat the labor to change it because they don't pay for that.
A reman long block is the safest way to go but your getting into a real expense. You have to add in all the hoses, belts, plugs wires, radiator, etc. All the things that need to be changed with the motor. Retail, you could spend $3000 to $4000 before your finished. The $1000 to repair it is real cheap compared to what you'll see if you change the motor with anything reliable. Even used you could spend $2000.
