replace head gasket volvo Sign In

Greetings.
My buddy has a 1991 volvo 240 which he stopped driving due to a busted head gasket. The mechanic wants 1500 to pull the engine out and replace it. If I get ahold of an engine hoist, is this a job I can do myself? or do I need specialty tools to recalibrate parts that are removed (such as valves and springs). I don't mind the 10 hours of hard labor I'm just curious to know if the average handyman would be capable. Would I need a stand or can I work with the engine on the hoist?
Any advice/ideas/information would be much appreciated.

I don't know if this is something you should attempt if you have no experience at all. You need to recognize a potential problem when you see one. You may need some pullers if you have to change the balancer for any reason. I'm sure there will likely be a lot of parts transfer from one engine to the other so you will be working on 2 engines at the same time so you will need a place for the second engine while transferring parts. Coming out isn't too hard but going back in usually requires some experience and technique to get everything in the proper position and meshed together.

Well... youll need a valve spring puller, if you do decide to pull it yourself noterize everything it is your doing and place all bolts on a flat serface in wich they would go back in. Needless to say its a risky operation and id suggest not doing it if your not sure of how to do so. ( but in anycase, no need to replace the entire engine )
