I have a 1989 toyota 4x4 3.0 and had my heads rebuilt cause I burnt a valve.Ive got it back together and it doesnt want to start ,acts as tho its out of time. I can get it to start if I move distributer a notch but still acts out of time.I took it back apart to verify my timing belt, camshaft sprockets and crankshaft are perfectly lined up.Im missing something and am at wits end.Not my first time either.maybe my forth. any ideas?Heads were done by a reputable shop who have been in the business a long time

Cam timing is very critical. Off one tooth, anywhere, and you'll get these results. Assuming the cam timing is perfect, tight valves can cause a 'retarded' seeming symptom. Also, make sure the distributor is in correctly. On compression stroke on #1, timing mark at TDC, rotor should be pointing exactly at #1 on the dist. cap. Could be off a tooth and just not have enough adjustment to advance the timing far enough. Loren SW Washington

I doubt that it is the heads that is the problem. Make certain that you are on #1 on the compression stroke. (remember the crank goes around twice) Make certain that the distributor is installed correctly. Check valve clearances. Cold: Intake .007-.011 Exhaust: .009-.013... Loren SW Washington

There is only one #1 cylinder. I'll attach a firing order for you. Remove #1 spark plug, disable ignition so that you won't get hit by 30,000 volts, have someone 'bump' over the engine for you in very quick on/off bumps until you feel a push of air coming from the spark plug hole. That will be your compression stroke. Then, align the crank mark to TDC, then check your distributor. Note: Firing order 1-2-3-4-5-6 -------OOPS..Pic didn't come thru. Looking from Front of engine: 1 3 5 (pass. side) 2 4 6 (driver side) Loren SW Washington
