i am swapping motors on my 99 suburban, 5.7 lt vortex, i am trying to get the fan clutch assy off my old motor to use it on my new motor, it has a large bolt in between the fan and the pulley, i have tried to double wrench one of the pulley bolts and put a pipe wrench on the large bolt, but i can't seem to break it loose, any trick to getting this off, thanks. someone told me to get a air chisel and make a groove in it then tap it loose, does this thing have reverse threads on it?

There are special tools that help with those. The clutch should unscrew in normal CC (don't quote me) direction off of the water pump. It can take the right tool and air hammer to get it started and really helps if a belt is still on it - hard to hold pulley with common tools,

hey tom, how's the weather up there, 61 degrees and sunny here in charlotte, anyway, i don't have an air chisel, i could go buy one, i didn't think about putting the belt back on, good tip, that would help with holding it in place, i have soaked it with WD40 and tapped the outside with a hammer to hopefully help loosen some of the rust, but it hasn't helped. the motor i pulled didn't have any physical damage, so i guess it probably has a spun bearing somewhere, i didn't have to turn it back in as a core, so i may rebuild it. i guess i will go buy an air chisel and try that.

It's kinda meant to be tight for the first smidge of a turn. These are the air tools but you could probably line up a shot with a regular hammer and a rod to break clutch loose. Brute force doesn't alway beat the shock of the hammer effect as air tools can do.

They do have long ones to grab the hex but you still get stuck trying to hold the pump w/o damage to the pulley.

Weather! Still cold here - bouces in single digits at night and a hour or two over 32F sometimesFrown We've had a lot of snow and it hasn't melted back to bare ground yet since the first good one - which stinks. Further North it rarely does but usually we lose all snow for a while mid-Winter in Southern New England.

Can't get anything done outside without shoveling a path to things. Need a part off my parts car now burried which will wait as it's a yard ornament (neighbors love these things of course) way out back.

I'm watching the ruins of the ice storm that mainly hit Kentucky - home of our famous "way2old" who's sending out smoke signals to get on line right now!

If you can wait and want cheapo air tools - try Harbor Frieght or just borrow one for just that clutch if you have to. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Send some of that heat up here please. Next heating bill here will probably come crated!

well, i couldn't get the darn thing off, so while i was at the scrap yard today, i saw one that was already off the motor, so i bought it, $9.00, saved me the trouble of messing with it, so its on the new motor now and the motor is back in the suburban, now all thats left is for me to hook everything back up. take care, we are suposed to be getting some nasty weather here in the next couple days, so i am sure glad i got this far on it, should have it running in a couple days if i can spend some time on it during the evenings. later
