Too much fuel could account for noise in exhaust frequently late carbs the choke pull off diaphragms leaked too much to instantly lean mixture but keep just enough choke till warmed up. This noise from the back? Could be a u-joint. If the set up uses a center bearing I suppose that could cause noise. Check the u-joints first just by grabbing the driveshaft - no motion is acceptable. Some will show tel-tale rust. They can be bad and still no free-play and you get stuck just taking the driveshaft out to really inspect them.
