I have a 96 saturn sc-1 with 120 k. Right now it needs a new clutch. But lately it's been bucking forward when i have my foot on the gas. Then one day when i was pulling into my lot, the power steering locked up and the service light came on and the car died. Now when I start it in neutral, the rpm meter rises and falls and the car shakes violently for a few seconds then dies right away. Any idea what this problem could be? Is it expensive to fix? I looked under the hood and nothing looks broken but I don't really know what to look for...would you suggest I fix it or just say F**k it and get a whole new car. It also eats up oil like no other car i've ever driven, but apparently that's a saturn thing...

just from the sound of your post I'd venture to say that the car has been lacking regular maintenance for some time. the clutch alone is nothing a novice should attempt - on this particular car. the clutch requires suspending the engine assembly with a special tool. the power steering locked up because the engine quit, then the check engine light came on. the rpm's going up and down could be due to anything from fuel pressure regulator being bad to spark plugs fouled to idle control being bad...or posssibly just a fuel filter clogged up.

sounds like you have a multitude of things gone bad that will require a pretty large chunk of change regardless of wether you were to do it yourself or pay to have it fixed.

bottom line is...if you really like the car and want to keep it--get it fixed and then follow maintenance schedules religiously. otherwise...junk it.

you might look into a japanese made car...they are a bit more forgiving than american made stuff....but you still must maintain them.

maintenance schedules can be found in the owners manual.
