Try taking off your serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away. If it does, the trouble is a belt driven accessory. If not, I would drop the oil pan and check the rod and main bearings for damage. Be advised that to do so will require someone with knowledge and experience to put it back together properly and to properly evaluate the bearings themselves.

Bear in mind if you do have a bad bottom end the motor will need to be pulled out and overhauled. If thats not to your liking with the age of the vehicle a used motor might be a decent route. Just make sure there is some guarantee that the one you get isn't a million mile wonder on its last legs. Most salvage yards have gotten good about listing the exact condition upfront of what they have. Good luck to you.

Yep, that's the down side to these forums. We don't get to actually hear the noise and in your case it probably would have made it pretty easy to identify what the really problem was. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yes it is, I was prepared to get an other 5.7 ,but i was in the right place and right time. You would be surprised on what a garden hose will do or wooding stick. They carry a tick or sound real nice.

That's true. we improvise like that all the time. I just got lucky, and was in the right place at the right time. A 32" garden hose or shovel stick work perfect and carry a sound or tick. Thanks again

In do time i will get an other motor. Some people think your nuts when you get a garden hose to listen for sound. It works great on the top of the motor or bottom. Thanks a lot

If your motor is still running right, I wouldn't just change it out. Glad it was only a flexplate. Takes a bit of labor but cheaper than an engine for sure. Thanks for posting the fix. Don't think you're nuts. I used to think I was but the voices in my head convinced me I was fine

As it was mentioned before it real tough diag'ing a noise online. You can't hear the speed, pitch, area, etc...... Slower knocks are usually bottom end, so of course the faster ones would be top end. You can try disabling the suspected cyl and if the makes a big differenc in how loud the knock is you are probably looking at a lower end problem......... Good luck

It sounds like the upper right of the motor . I have the valve covers off. Some of the push rods are loose and some not. A few of the rockers are loose and some are not. I am at top dead center . I am considering on replacing the push rods, but of course i do not know how tight the need to be.?

I believe your barking up the wrong tree with the push rod idea. Of course the tension would vary as some valves are open and some are not.

OK Then were do i go from here? I could put the valve covers back on,And put a Qt of ATF in the motor and let it run for a hour .And change out the oil and see what happens . I CAN SAY ALL ROCKERS/PUSH RODS ARE RECEIVING OIL.

I have no idea what your noise is and no one else will be able to identify a noise over the Internet. It's just not possible to identify something you can't hear.
