overpressure in coolant system? '98 S10

 Trying to find and diagnose coolant leak in my son's '98 S10. Filled radiator with coolant, started engine with cap off and coolant shot out of the filler neck like a geyser. With cap on, coolant pours out of overflow reservoir. Seems like some sort of blockage. Any ideas?
