I HAVE A 1990 JEEP CHEROKEE,4.0L,OVER HEATING IF IDLE TO LONG OR STUCK IN TRAFFIC,DOES ALRIGHT GOING DOWN THE FREEWAY.DID NOT HAVE PROBLEM TILL I CHANGED THE AUTO TRANS AND PULLED THE RADIATOR OUT TO BE CLEANED AT LOCAL RADIATOR SHOP,ALSO CHANGED THERMOSTAT AT SAME TIME.THANK YOU.

Check to see if your cooling fan is coming on.

If it has HD cooling, it will also have an electric fan.

YOU ARE CORRECT AND EVEN WHEN THAT COMES ON IT DOES NOT DETER IT FROM BOILING OVER IN THE RESEVIOR.

Why did you have it cleaned in the first place. You must have already had a problem, right?

NO ISSUES.PUT A NEW TRANS IN AND CLEANED PER WARRENTY.

If your not having a problem at cruising speed, it can only be a fan problem. It may need a new fan clutch. Make sure the shroud is good and the radiator air flow isn't restricted.

It's possible but not real likely. Just driving it should work the air out.

I have 95 cherokee and have battled the same problem. Large engine in a small space. Small cooling system. I put on a high flow water pump, this helped a little. The electric cooling fan will not come on unless the ac is running or the engine reaches 215 degrees and by then it will not bring the temp down. I put on a toggle switch so I can control the electric fan. This was a big help. I have a heavy duty radiator for next summer. It took me a while to find one, I know from experience I wont have a cooling problem next summer. In the book that came with vehicle it even mentions hot weather with ac on, or going up a mountain. It is a weak cooling system. I put larger radiators on all my vehicles if I can . They all have over 200k miles. Cherokees are great I wish they still made them.
