I've been shopping for a truck and see them advertised as 4X4, 2X4, 2WD, anyway, I though 4X4 meant 4 wheel drive 4 speed, and 2X4 was 2 wheel drive 4 speed, others say 4X4 just means 4 of 4 wheels are powered and 2X4 is 2 of 4 wheels are powered, and that an automatic 4wheeler would be just 4WD, what say yous

Things are changing in the automotive world . It used to be a truck with power to rear wheels only was 2wd , power to all four but able to disengage front was part time 4wd. A car with power to rear wheels was just a car. To front wheels only , a fwd car . To all four wheels they call it AWD, all wheel drive. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

4X4 means 4 wheel drive with any transmission and 2X4 means 2 wheel drive with any transmission. AWD is advanced 4X4. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

4 x 4 and 2 x 4 are sizes of wood. 2wd means that the transmission drives two wheels 4wd means that the transmission drives two wheels, but has a transfer case that gives the driver the ability to lock the front wheels to the transmission to drive four wheels. This can be done electronically or manually. Awd means the transmission and transfer case drive all four wheels all the time and the operator doesn't have the option of unlocking two of the wheels from the transmission.
