opinion needed re: replacing w/ used engine Sign In

guess i'm a little confused about what to do. I have a 1998 Ford Escort and the engine died a couple weeks ago. It has over 180, 000 miles...and i asked the mechanic if we could get the car running again and fix it. He explained about getting a used engine and the cost and such...which will be around $1,200 approx. maybe more, maybe a bit less if we find an engine cheaper. I guess I'm wondering other people's opinions...if i should go ahead and fix it? Or use the money I would of paid to fix it...and use it toward another used car? (between $1,200-$1,800) Not sure what would be better? Any suggestions would be appreciated...i keep going back and forth. Frown

there are good and bad to either way, you could easly spend more to fix yours than it is worth, but at the same time if you buy another used car you very well could be purchasing someone elses problems, so this is a judjement call on your part, if you decide to buy another car take it to your mechanic prior to purchase to have it checked out, anyone selling a car that will not let you do this is trying to hide a problem from you

Argh! When this happens I suggest you think of it as the car is worth nothing now and you are buying it for the cost of this repair. Many used engine jobs come out just fine if done by the right tech.

Ask yourself - would you take this car as a gift and do the repair knowing more about the rest of this car than you would another? Total judgment call on your part,

T
