If it’s the gear and it’s the gear from the original engine; it may not be the same pitch on the gear’s teeth to match the cam? The cam being made of a harder metal; it might be grinding the teeth off of the oil pump gear? Or the camshaft’s gear’s teeth are worn and its grinding the oil pumps teeth off? I’ve seen some cam gear’s teeth so badly worn; that you would cut your finger, if you were to run your finger over its edge. But at the same time; worn so evenly; that you would have too look very close, to see the wear. You may end up replacing the camshaft and the gear; making sure that the two belonged together. Dan.
