oil pressure gauge Sign In

I have a 1996 Chevy Z71 5.7 Votec. Oil pressure at first start up is around 60 psi. The longer it runs the pressure decreases to the point where , at idle at a stop sign , the pressure drops to around 5 psi and the check gauge light will come on. When you take off again the pressure will go back up to around 25 to 30 psi. I just changed the oil to make sure that that was not the problem. I used Castrol 10 W30. Have not changed the oil pressure sending unit. I was thinking of putting in mechanical gauge. Any ideas what may cause this. Thanks.

You should definitely put a mechanical gauge on it to confirm what the pressure is. When you have good oil pressure when the oil is cold, but low or no oil pressure when hot, there is a bearing issue in the engine.
