1998 dodge durango 5.2L. oil pressure goes down when you rev the engine for a few seconds then goes back up at idle.could this be the pump or oil screen.

im sorry im not sure,it belongs to my son and hes not home right now. i think he said it did the same thing a few months ago, and he put the the thinner oil in it and the pressure stayed up. we tried the thinner oil this time 20w50, but it didnt help.going to try a motor flush but not sure it will help. thanks for your reply Frank

NO, do not flush anything. You can make things much worse that way. 20W50 is not thinner oil. It is thicker. The oil pressure is supposed to drop at idle so unless the oil light is coming on, I wouldn't even worry about it. If it is, then you may need a new oil pump.

it has a gauge, it will also start knocking when you rev it up and stop at idle. the gauge will drop to 0 when reving

The motor will have to be inspected to see if it is sludged up inside or not. If it is, then flushing will only cause the junk to break off in junks and end up in even worse places than it is now. A new oil pump may help but if he continues to rev it up with no oil pressure, he will soon be replacing a motor.

Quick read - sorry. This smacks of sluged up engine. DONT' FLUSH IT as Hammer Time said. It will only make it worse fast as I think oil pick up screen is marginal.
Plain new oil and I'll suggest Mobil 1, 0-30 which has a lime green cap. It plain will slowly clean up sludge and pass thru a clogged screen better. May toss junk to oil filter in small amounts as new oil is full of needed additives all by itself.
IMO - it's a total maybe if this engine can be saved. Lack of oil pressure is surely the quickest way to make it a huge paper weight,
