2001 Ford Taurus with 3.0 6 cylinder engine. 290,000 miles. Misfires (code p0301) just during the first start after several hours being parked. Smoothes out after about 2 to 3 minutes running. I am told it is a blown head gasket. The engine however does not lose any water. I have also been told it could be an injector. How do I determine which?

DOHC of OHV? Pressurize the system with a coolant pressure tester over night and remove the spark plugs. Next morning look down in the cylinders and see if there is coolant laying on top of the pistons or crank the engine and see if any coolant sprays out the spark plug holes. If you think it is an injector leaking, remove the rail but leave it connected to the fuel line. Pressurize the rail and watch for leaking. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Just to add: 290K - wow! Do as much testing as possible with it basically intact. IMO if you did have to tear into it for too much something else will be close behind. Do and can engines go that long and more - yes but not all that often, T

Eeek, 10,000 mile oil changes! Not good so you've been lucky. Not even pure synthetic oil. Not consuming oil doesn't mean all is well as it could just be displacing burning oil with with something else like fuel! With this info do the leak test DS mentioned and then a compression test or I would. Might have wear that hasn't shown itself much? T
