nissan micra problem, please help

my engine seems to be overheating at the moment and i have looked at the
coolant tank and its empty, would this be the reason why it is
overheating and if so which would be the best coolant to buy for it,
sorry about the daft question im new to driving

You need to have the system pressure tested to find the leak. Driving it could lead to severe engine damage.

would the coolant have something to do with it overheating tho? its not leaking i just havent topped it up for a while, i dont want to drive to to the garage until i know that the coolant has something to do with keeping the engine cool

Coolant is what keeps the engine cool......... hence the name "coolant"
