need help with 1992 buick century.

big problems this morning starting my car in -40 weather. my car was stalling and loosing battery life every few minutes, so i took a look under the hood and noticed the fan belt was loose, then i noticed there was a ring from around the main fly wheel (on the bottom/center of the engine block) where the belt sits has poped off. my question is, is this an easy job to pop back on? do they have to lift the engine and hammer it, or can they just heat up the ring and slip it on? i hope this doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, it's already costing me for a tow and estimate. 1992 buick century 4 door 6 cyl.

Cars don't like -40F and once I was in that. The belt is probably a problem with the tensioner they may have just frozen somehow?? Get a new belt too when you do this as it may have been damaged even if newer. You should have the most powerful battery you can get in there. It goes by CCA which is cold-cranking-amps. Batteries lose a lot of power at cold temps so the more the better. Good luck with it and stay WARM! T On Edit: The ring on the bottom pulley is part of the harmonic balancer which is its name. If it fell off there is no known repair just replacement which does require a puller and air tools help tons, T - again

This might clear up the problem a little better. This Ring. (where the belt usually sits) Came off of this wheel. I really hope it's not a major hassle to pop it back on.

The harmonic balancer is rubber isolated to that belt ring and NOT fixable -- you need a replacement for that. It is the source of all belt power but also to absorb engine vibrations thru the rubber and weight of it that was carefully engineered for each type of engine. The glue or whowever it's done in making one is beyond me and I've never even tried as it's similar to motor mounts and I know of NO way to fix but just replace these type parts. From school daze ---- don't even try to run an engine without this part intact as I was told it can destroy an engine! T

In this car the real labor will be how easy it is to get at. I think you can get at this thru the wheel well which would be nice. Air tools as mentioned will help. That center bolt/nut is tight and will just turn the engine with regular tools unless you can lock it at the transmission end with a pry bar on the ring gear/flywheel. When all fasteners are removed it just comes off and new one is easy going on. Cost is probably a couple hours of you local labor rate but it might be a tad more, Let us know how you make out with this. Lots of folks search out these post so I do my best to be accurate, T

thanks a lot, my car is now running again. i would have done it myself but i figured paying 2 hours for labor was better than working in 2 hours in -35 weather. the balancer was a little more $$$ than originally thought though.
