Re: my car does not start Sign In

Have the battery and the charging system tested. If they receive a clean bill of health then maybe the starter.

To Add: Check all the connections and clean them as long as you doing that. I use a smear of grease but even a dose of WD-40 or equivilant can help. Certainly check the battery and you might need a starter as Dan said.

Re: my car does not start Sign In

i think my batteries are working fine cuz i can start the car and lights go on inisde my car.. when i turn the key the car turns but it just makes that sound when you start your car... but it never ignites.. i had my sparks changed and it still dont work..

do you think its the fuel injector or fuel pump.. some of my freinds are saying i should change those.. also my check engine light has been on

and by the way.. whats a starter?

also when my car does start in the morning, and i hit a stop sign/ red light and i step on the gas in first gear, my rpm dips down to about 200 rpm and it feels like the engine just died, then after in 2nd gear the car seems fine... this is very sad thx for any help

Re: my car does not start Sign In

You asked " What's a Starter" ------ A starter probably should be said "starter motor" which is a heavy duty motor that turns your engine by battery power until it takes off on its own. To my knowledge all fuel based vehicles still use them and have forever. Never be afraid to ask on a term or name of anything. This is a really friendly site and as long as YOU are not nasty or use bad words it's your place for any questions.

Re: my car does not start Sign In

Oxygen sensors should NOT be involved with a starting problem?? They could be bad but a separate issue.

Re: my car does not start Sign In

I would forget the sensors for now. A back fire could be distributor cap, rotor, wires or a timing belt that has moved/jumped and if that you'll be walking soon! If you know it's got 60,000 miles on it get it replaced! If you have no idea how old it is it is suspect for trouble.

Re: my car does not start Sign In

By all means, take Tom's advice and get that timing belt changed. You throw that belt and game over. Backfiring is also telling me dist cap, rotor, wires or timing. With this car, I think Tom and everyone here would agree that it is time to start spending some of that First Holy Communion money.Wink Good Luck 240 and let us know what you found out.

Re: my car does not start Sign In

Distributor Cap holds wires to spark plugs, rotor is a pointy thing inside it that allows engine to distribute the spark to the correct spark plug at the right time. Most of them just pull out for replacement. Best to replace both the cap and rotor if desired. CHANGE/MOVE PLUG WIRES ONE AT A TIME AND DON'T SCREW THAT UP!!!!!! I can't help much over a computer with that for you if you get them all mixed up. Smile

Re: my car does not start Sign In

guess what

my problem has been fixed i think/hope... i took my car to a mechanic my frined knew and trusted and he looked at my car and i told them everything all of you have told me i should get checked/fixed and what he did was change my coolent temp something(not really sure what it was, and his writing on the recipt is extra messy and illegible), but it was all coroded and dirty and he replaced that and that was the reason my car wasnt starting... also he tighetned my timeing chain. my check engine light is still on but my car seems to be starting whenever i need it to so the main problem seems to be fixed... i thank all that helped me especially tom for always posting information

Re: my car does not start Sign In

If engine is running well again the "check engine" light will give up after a time. It remebers a problem but will forget it at so many starts, and miles if no longer there.Smile

Re: my car does not start Sign In

I have a 99 mercury cougar and it will not start. I checked the battery and even tried to jump it. I tried to pop the clutch to just get it started and that did not work. I am having trouble checking the starter, I can't get to it but shouldn't popping the clutch get it started. help if you can thank you

Re: my car does not start Sign In

Hi,

You are piggy backed on a thread that started about two years ago. Best to make a new one under "General Discussions"

In the mean time please tell us whether the engine is even turning either by starter or the jump in gear trick while coasting along. I'm not sure quite what you meant,

T
