my 1999 neon Sign In

yesterday when i went to start my car i noticed a little bit of smoke coming off of the engine. when i opened up the hood i noticed there was some liquid by the cap where you put power steering fluid. however the smoke was coming from underneath some hoses. anyone have any idea what could be the cause. i know i am being very vague with my post. thank you

peaches; Did the 'smoke' have any odor? If so, what did it smell like? Sweet smell? Pungent? Rubber? Hot? Electical? Was there any color? Check all of your fluids....oil, trans. fluid, power steering, coolant, ect... Give us as much info as possible.

Re: my 1999 neon Sign In

hi, thank you for responding to my problem. there wasnt any smell and the color of the smoke was a grayish. when i opened up the hood and had a friend open the power steering cap there were bubbles but he said that the liquid and smoke was not coming from the power steering. i have checked all of my fluids and i was just a little low on oil but not to much. i am beginning to wonder if it wasnt oil??? if oil is leaking into the engine does that mean the head gasket is going? thanks so much for your help

Re: my 1999 neon Sign In

peaches; Not neccessarily...You can have an oil leak that leaks onto the exhaust system, but in most cases, it's just an annoyance, or just cosmetic. In very rare cases, the oil can ignite, but as I said, is very rare. The Neons' did have a problem with the head gaskets leaking oil externally, but it's been quite a while since I've seen one, as most have been fixed with the updated gaskets. And, again, it was just cosmetic. I'd try to find the origin of the smoke before getting too concerned. I don't want to 'minimize' what's going on, but if the fluid levels are remaining full, don't see any 'puddles' of fluid, no overheating....ect...
