I have a Mazda 6 with 80,000 miles which has no history of leaking or burning oil. A few days ago, the check engine light came on, so I took to my local dealer where I get the car serviced. They informed me that the car was 3.5 quarts low on oil. It has been less than 3000 miles since my last oil change, so this was a lot of oil in a very short time. The dealer said they found no evidence of a leak and said that the car must be burning oil due to a "stuck" PCV valve. I know that 3.5 quarts of oil can't just disappear, but I have never seen any evidence of a leak or smoke from burning oil. I had the oil changed at the same dealership and am concerned that they may have messed up my oil change and are now covering it up. Can anyone tell me if a car would just start burning oil at that rate for no reason(3.5 quarts in 3000 miles)? Do I need to be concerned about permanent damage that may have occured in my engine? Is there anything I can check myself to verify or disprove the story from the dealership? Any suggestions or advice would be helpful. Thanks.

As long as it's not knocking, smoking or anything out of the ordinary, I would start from scratch..... You just had the oil changed....verify the level & keep a close eye on it....
