It could be spark secondary items like coil(s) wires, plugs or a lot of possibilities. Fuel pressure, if a four a timing belt issue. With age and miles a lot of things are possible. You could try to make it sputter at idle with spaying like salt water on the wires and secondaries, coil, distributor cap - whatever and see if that really aggrevates the problem. If it doesn't they probably are ok. Even plugged up converter(s) could cause loss of power but they tend not to make it sputter as you said.
