milky water: more to changing head gasket than just gasket?

Hi Forum I have an old Renault Laguna which is close to roadworthy but needs attention. One of the two main problems is an oil leak at the front of th engine. This could be from anywhere, but given the milky water I think the head gasket may be to blame. 1. Can a failing head gasket cause an external oil leak?2. Is there more to changing a head gasket than just changing the gasket? Does anything need recalibrating after changing it? I know changing the head gasket is labour intensive but that doesn't put me off. I just need to know if there are other things need doing after changing it such as distribution, engine timing or other things I would have to get a professional to do. Trying to weigh up time / cost of repairs versus selling it. Thanks Renault Laguna 2.0l RXE, 1994
