loud metalic noise Sign In

MR.Green i dont know if u remember me but im the guy with the bonnevill that would not start whene it was frezzing out and the cae would flood and woud eventually stat well thanks to you that problem was solved abot two mounths ago it was the coolent temp sencer thank you so much but now at oataly unrelated problem i got a pretty loud mettalic noise comming from the crank pully /oil filter area so i ran the car with no belt on to make sure that it wasnt accessereys like water pump power stearing ect. and the noise was not as loud instead of a more almost grinding noise it turned into a lower sounding like for instance a mettal ball bearing boncing on a mutch heavier thicker piece of steal so i started trying to get to the timing chain cover in doing so noticed that the harmarnic ballencer is like steel in the middle then rubber then steel pully but the rubber is seperatted from outer pulley part of the harmonic ballancer. so i dont know if tat is the problem right thier ... i know its (a problem) could it be the whole problem or is it more likely that timing chan tensioner wore a fell in cover or oil pump gear tooth broke . i havent got the ballencer off yet but wouldlike some thoughts on the situation keep in mind that other then a scarey loud metallic niose this cars oil pressure was fine water temp . was fine the moters power was all thier so in other word other than a scary noise the car was completly fine other than noise way do i always have these wierd problems with this car ? i bout ready to drive this thing into a brick wall a buy japan made car the car im tlking about by the way is a 91 pontiac bonnevill 3.8 moter thatrun great other that a loud sounds like its going to blow up type noise any ideas would be greatly apreciated

Re: loud metalic noise Sign In

I know you directed this question at Tom Greenleaf but I‘m going to beat him to the punch. LOL
With the description you gave, on the condition of the harmonic balancer; I’d say you’ve found your noise.
These year's of 3.8's were well known for this problem; or at least I've had to replace a number of them.
Like you said, you know it’s a problem on its own; so why not replace it now and try running the engine? It’s not much of a job and if it is the cause of the noise; then you’re done; all fixed.
