losing oil pressure on 1980 F100 Sign In

I just recently replaced the clutch in my 1980 F100 after it sat for several months. It has a in-line six 300 in it. I've only drove it a couple times since then. Usually after starting the engine and taking off, the oil pressure gauge will almost peak out until I come to a stop somewhere, then it would return to normal and be fine from then on. But the last two times i drove it, it would do that, run normal for between 6 and 9 miles, but then it starts dropping a considerable amount. Each time I was only going about 12 miles, but by the time I got to where I was going, the needle on the gauge was at the bottom line of the normal range. It's never ran that low that I can remember in the last 10 years. Any ideas on what the problem may be and/or possibly how to fix this? I know as little about cars as anyone you are likely to meet, but if I don't do it myself, it won't get done at all.

Re: losing oil pressure on 1980 F100 Sign In

I had an F150 1979 with a 300 6. There are a couple of things you can do. The first is there should be a line from your oil assending unit on I believe the right side of the motor by the oil filter going to the firewall then to the gauge. Mine cracked and it was leaking which in turn dropped the oil pressure until I replaced the line. The other is not as easy. It could be the oil pump which you would have to remove the oil pan to get to. If it is making noise like no oil is getting to the upper parts of the motor, you should here a tapping similar to when you first change oil and start your truck before the oil starts circulation in the motor. It could also just be the gauge. I would check the line to the gauge out first. Hope this helps.
