After driving it a short way I saw my coolant was pouring out from underneath. It didn't take long before it was drained completely. I took off the hose that connects the radiator to the engine. No problems with the hose. I looked at where the hose connects and both don't seem to have any cracks or holes. I reattached the hose and left it running for a few minutes. It was not leaking at first but after just a few minutes it began to pour out again. Any ideas? There are upper and lower hoses to radiator and by-pass and heater hoses involved - more on the V8s. Anything that holds coolant could leak. You'll really need to fill and look for a large leak it should show up for you. Fill at the radiator, dry off areas as needed to find it. Know that liquids will leak down so source will be the highest spot you see the wetness. There are vent hole(s) on water pump (on engine, belt driven with fan on front) and pump seals can let go and allow coolant out of those holes - the underside one is hard to see without a mirror. It looks like it is coming from either around the housing or right behind the housing for the lower radiator hose. I can't see anything but if I put a rag behind where the hose goes onto the housing the leak stops. Ryan Tom Greenleaf Ultimate Carjunky / Moderator May 31, 2008, 10:15 AM Post #4 of 5 (4155 views) Re: large coolant leak Sign In Ok: This engine is likely the 5.0 or 5.8L and you can see the lower vent hole with a dental like mirror. If you dry that and actually see water/coolant coming out of there it needs a water pump replacement with about as much certainty as can be had. If you grab the fan it may even rock a bit back and forth (front to rear) and it shouldn't by any real noticable amount - some but as said not much and that can also be the fan clutch and I suggest if you do get the water pump to get the fan clutch replaced as well. Relax - I didn't mean clutch like a transmission - the one for the fan. Whatever you do don't let it overheat and cause more problems. If fan wobbles then this shouldn't be driven much now as if pump lets go completely it can damage lots of stuff, T spike99145 New User May 31, 2008, 12:06 PM Post #5 of 5 (4153 views) Re: large coolant leak Sign In Well I replaced the lower hose and that did not fix the problem. I finally was able to see behind the housing and after drying it saw where the water is coming from. It is definitely coming from the water pump. Thanks so much for your help and advice!
