i have a 90 jeep comanchee 2.5l 4cyl 2 wheel drive that when you first start it cold it dosn't want to idol but after a few minutes it idols perfect if you drive it an hour it will be reving to about 1500 rpm after 2 hours it will run 55 mph with out you giving it any gas on the main road after that you need to ride the brakes to go slow enouf for the road this one has confused all the mechanics i know of another simptom is that if you haul any thing heavy it seems to have more power on hills than empty when empty it has a hesitation in the gas pedel so far ive replaced the egr valve, map sensor, fuel pump, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor button, air filter, coil, o2 sensor, fuel filter. and that is all i can think of right now. any ideas? it has definitely stumped me

You may want to start by checking for vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks let unmetered air pass into the combustion chamber resulting in higher idle and leaner mixture. Also, check the throttle plate to make sure it is fully closed at idle. Idle stop screw, throttle linkage assembly, idle air control motor stuck open, these can cause higher idle rpm especially when warm. If none of these prove positive, you should also get the engine checked for a faulty head or gasket. Steve

so far i got to work on it a bit today and i checked for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner and i also checked for bad vacuum lines the throttle plate is closing all the way the idol stop screw is all the way in not even touching the throttle the throttle linkage is in good condition as far as i can tell. how do you check if the iac is stuck open? and where is it at on this jeep?

Hi James. I have found a technical service bulletin for a faulty throttle position sensor. It does affect idle speed. You may want to replace yours to see if this clears up. The sensor is relatively inexpensive. Steve

just got a chance to work on it a bit today and and the idle control motor was stuck so i cleaned it up got it unstuck and checked it with a ohm meter and it seems good haven't had a chance to put it back on yet to see what it will do and haven't had a chance to check the throttle position sensor. are there any other things that can cause this while i have a chance to work on it?
