1998 Ford Taurus Station wagon

I am considering getting the fuel injectors cleaned. The local place wants about $80 to do it. My questions are:
1. Does a professional cleaning really make a differnt
2. How do you do you know if your car needs it
3. Is 80 dollars a fair price
4. do those auto store over the counter things like Lucas Oil sells, do any good?

A professional cleaning is the only thing that will make any difference. Anything added to the tank is just too weak to do anything. They may help keep it clean if used regularly but won't clean any varnish that's already there. It's a good idea to do it maybe every 60K or so.
$80 is more than fair as long as they are doing a service where the factory fuel pump is disabled and the car actually runs on the cleaner. Just sucking it into the intake cleans the intake system but not the injectors.

So I should ask them how they do the cleaning? They should say the disconect the fuel pump and run straight cleaner through them.

Ask them if they are pressure cleaning the injectors or doing an induction cleaning. They are different and actually both should be done but some shops are a little deceptive and just call it fuel cleaning and you don't know what your getting.

I recently pulled my rail, injectors and cleaned them after a 2.5 year sit, I think the injectors may be clogged, it will only try to start with starter spray. replaced pump, regulator, orings and filter could this type cleaning remove stained/varnished deposits? where can it be done 95 intrepid 3.5(have post here "only runs on starter fluid" has spark and fuel come back in return line so it should be going thru system correctly?

Side topic to this:
I've have had good luck with Chevron's "techron" and in harsh situation got bailed out with SeaFoam.
BTW - a 2.5 year sit is plain going to show some suprises and if fuel wasn't stabilized it wouldn't be much good IMO,
