hi, i have a '85 GMC sierra classic with a 305, just put on new wires, plugs and distributor cap, rotor. the problem is the timing is off, i'm able to see the timing mark on the crank pulley but i cant even begin to figure out where the TDC mark is on the block or how to time it properly. if you could spread some light on this i would really appreciate it, i have all the necessary tools e.g. timing light, compression sensor, tools. thanks

There should be something on the block looking down from passengers side towards the harmonic balancer. It may have a hole and a point or edge that is used. Hard to see as you can't get the timing light real close without being in the fan. What you did does not change the timing so it is where it was still, T
