help with 1985 pontiac acadian Main rear seal replacement

I have a 1985 pontiac acadian I got for $400 about 5 months ago I also have a 84 chevette witch is the same car basically, about 2 months ago it started leaking oil just a bit at first but now its out of hand I know its the rear seal but I don't have the money to pay some one to do it for me. I have abit of experience with fixing cars and trucks but Iv never pulled an engine or done anything like this before but I have help from my dad who was a mechanic so Im not to worried about that. what I want to know is if I can just drop the transmission and fix the seal that way or is it easier to pull the engine out and fix it?
ps I spent $700 on the car that is now for parts also its my first car and it was a lemon so hoping to save myself some money I bought the $400 car that had a dead starter I replaced the starter and for a bit it ran great but than the coil litarly distagrated so insted of having it towed home and fix it whitch would have cost about $300 I had it fixed at the esso I pushed it to that cost $248....they replased the coil the distrubuter and the rotter, the car ran but I just barily got home turns out the distributer wasn't put on right and the coil was cracked now it wont run so I cant take it back and they wont come out and fix Id cut my losses but my losses are $1348 all the money I had saved up and than some I cant cancle my insurances because theres a huge cancellation fee because I'm on a monthly payment plan If I give up I have no way to get another car so I have to fix this car I know non of that is relevant to my question but I needed to get that off my chest.

For the rear main seal, thats a 2 piece seal & the main bearing cap needs to be removed to replace so you just need to take the oil pan off to do it....
As far at the other car goes. you may want to check your fuel pump. It runs off the dist & needs to be removed before changing the distributor. If not the pump will be damaged & cause a no start.....................
