my daughter has a 1997 Chrysler town and country minivan. It stalled out today. At times the acceleration went down on its own then would pick back up on its own as well. It did backfire a couple of times as well then it will stall out. After it sits for awhile it will start again but you have to really press down on the gas to get it running. Then it may run good for a few minutes then it all starts over again. What could it possibly be?

Get the codes read. Seems like it's over-fueling and why unknown for the moment. Check the engine oil. If too full or smells like gas it will harm the engine,

Which engine?

Could be a fuel pressure problem. Low pressure can cause the engine to bog out, stall out, and possibly backfire through the intake if lean enough. Connect a fuel pressure gauge up and see what the fuel pressure is when the problem is occurring.
