I have a 1990 Dodge Caravan that is sooting up the plugs and blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. The car won't hardly run unless you take out the plugs and clean them and then it still runs ruff. What is wrong?

Soot and black smoke are usually signs of over fuelling; which can be caused by a number of things. Excessive fuel pressure, leaking injector(s), engine mechanical, malfunctioning sensors or computer, the list could go on and on. Testing the different systems takes equipment and the knowledge to perform these tests. You tell us your abilities and access to equipment and we’ll try and help. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Thanks for the reply,I am not very mechanically inclined and I have no access to any test equipment so I guess it's mechanic shop time.I am hoping that there is nothing major wrong. Thanks again for your reply.

Let us know what their diagnosis is; if you are unsure or don’t feel comfortable with; we maybe able to agree with or give you a few question to ask before allowing the repair. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Just got word from the mechanic shop, they said that the Mapp sensor that tells the computer how much gas to inject into the cylinders was bad and needed to be replaced.

The new sensor put on but did not help, the mechanic shop has told me that they have hooked up the caravan to there digonistic unit and it shows everything to be working as it should, however it is putting too much fuel into the engine and making it flood and run "rich".The mechanic shop is going to do some morer testing in an effort to find out what is wrong.Do you guys have any suggestions?
