I’m not sure why anyone would do this either other then the return line has a leak in it somewhere? There are no running issues as to why someone would do this that I know of.
The main purpose of the return line on these engines was to relieve fuel pressure between the pump and the carb, after the engine was turned off. These engines need high volume pumps to deliver the fuel that these motorhome’s need to go down the road; no doubt you can attest to that. When the engine is shut off after a run, the under hood temperatures sour and cause the fuel pressure to build because of this heat. This pressure if not relieved via the return line would force the needle and seat of the carb to open and cause the engine to become flooded.
The return line even though it is made out of ¼ or 5/16 line only caries a small amount of fuel back to the tank. There is a .050” or .060” orifice in the pump’s return line spigot that restricts the amount of fuel that is allowed to return to the tank.

Re: fuel pump return line Sign In

thanks for the reply!!I agree with what you said.I just though i was missing something.I have rehooked it up (no leaks)were found ..I havn't gone anywere to check on the performance either way..This year came with & without returns.I though maybe because of the generator being hooked up to the same line was why ,but I dont know..I am having problems with it starting (got to pump the hell out of it(chocks fine),so maybe what you said might be a problem.I had bought a new pump( with the return)a couple of weeks ago to put on but was waiting for a few replys to see if i should get the one with out it...thanks again...rvdsr
