Hi, I have a 2000 ford taurus with the 24 valve dohc motor in it. The car has 120,000 on it, I replaced the plugs and wire boots at about 95,000 miles. My problem is that it had what I thought was an intake leak, I replaced the intake and plenium gaskets and still had a leak. I drove the car a short distance ( less than two miles) and the spark plug blow out of the head. The motor still runs, I was told that this problem was somewhat common. My question is that I was told the tool to retapp the head for the new plug is three hundered dallors. Does this sound right? Also when I retapp will the metal hurt the piston if it falls in the combustion chamber? Is there a place I can rent this tool? Thanks in advance I appreciate it.

That problem is only common when the plugs are installed incorrectly. They do make a kit to install a heli coil in there but I certainly don't recommend that you attempt it. Your going to end up buying a new head before this is all over just because you attempted to replace the plugs yourself.

I have to agree with HT on this......... Tapping & installing heli coils or timeserts is a skill. Replacing plug threads is not the best place to learn. This isn't a tool you just go out and buy and pop in the new timesert. You get the hole offcenter & you're buying a new head....
Look at the plug angle. If you are confident you can calculate & execute a dead center drill on this hole freehanded then give it a shot....but you only have one shot.........

He should be able to get is done for less money than buying the kit himself.

Yes I am aware of the difficulties in doing this, I have a friend who is a mechanic who will actually be doing this for me. My question is where do I buy this tool or rent it?? I am right outside of chicago IL. I appreciate al your help.

Haven't had the bad luck of having to do one ever but I see the assortments at my own local NAPA all the time by brand HeliCoil,

Your not going to find it any cheaper. It' an entire kit with drill bit and installation tools for doing more than one. Still say it's cheaper to have someone that already has the kit do it for you. Most places will do it for $100 or less. If you mess it up, your looking at $1000 for a new head.

You can call around to the major tool houses in your area to see if they rent it, but like HT said, I'm not aware of any place that rents this kind of tool, at least where I'm at.
The tool set is expensive, if your friend doesn't have the tool already it would make more sense taking it in. Call around and price the job out.
