All I can tell you is that I gave you the correct firing order for the engine you gave me unless it's a reverse rotation marine engine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

mjd: Look carefully at the graphic Hammer posted. Is the green in the right spot? It could be off one hole place all the way around. Check that rotor, rotates at it shows. Some truck engines and marine as HT said engines were counter rotating. I don't recall that for cars, T

The only other bit of advise I will offer is, you may want to pull the #1 plug & bring it up on the compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing to in the cap to see where the actual #1 is on the this engine. These engines you can put #1 where ever you want it. A tech should put it back according to the factory diagram HT posted if he's had the dist out, but I've seen them all over the board. Got my azz chewed out 30 years ago for doing the same thing.......

mjd; All of the advise above is correct. Check for any vacuum leaks. The only thing that I can think of that could affect #3 & #7 would be the EGR valve. Make sure that you don't have manifold vacuum going to it. Should be ported. To expand on Sidom's advice; As he said, remove #1 spark plug. Disconnect the electrical connection going to the distributor so that you don't get zapped by the coil. Have a helper 'bump' over the starter until you feel the 'push' of compression from the spark plug hole. This will be the compression stroke. Line up the timing mark on TDC. Remove the distributor cap and note where the rotor is pointing. This will be #1, the starting point for your firing order. The rotor turns clockwise. The driver's side of the engine is numbered, front to rear, 1-3-5-7, passenger side front to rear, 2-4-6-8. Once you determine where #1 is on the distributor, then it is: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The backfiring you describe would suggest that you probably have a couple of wires crossed. Very common mistake. The backfire can cause a fire in the carburetor. Be prepared, just in case. A bunch of rags handy to 'smother' a backfire usually works. Worse case would be a fire extinguisher. Those make a terrible mess and usually result in rebuilding the carb, but will save the rig.
