engine temp redlining

the engine temp gage on my 1998 Chevy Blazer recently redlined. The coolant was empty so I refilled it; however, the car's engine temp redlines after only a few minutes of driving. Any suggestions would be appreciated

You probably blew a head gasket or cracked a head. You need to have it checked out by a competent shop.
