'98 chevy k1500 350 auto 4x4 322k miles. i was traveling at idle speed at mall about to cross speed bump and the engine shut off and will not restart. fuel pump replaced approx. 4 months ago. have had no issues prior to this. i checked the battery terminals which were tight. there was no smoke, engine knock, or any other clues to what happened. the engine turns normally and kinda/sorta attempts to start. oil is clear and plenty of fuel in tank. all gauges showed normal and no engine/service lights. thanks for your help.

Don't rule out that you could have another fuel pump failure.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

That's enough miles for a host of surprises. Same tricks for as to why for a beginning try finding out what dropped out, spark or fuel. New pump or not it needs to deliver proper pressure. Connections all over could just suddenly fail,

I BEEN THRU THIS BEFORE. THIS MOTOR TENDS TO FLOOD WITH GAS. I IM BET IT HAS SOARK FULE AND COMPRESSION AND JUST CRANKS OVER. TRY THIS. Pull out your plugs , DISABLE YOUR ignition system and fuel INJECTORS BY FUSE,fuel pump relay et and hook up a battery and crank it for several minutes to clear out the flood. Remember do not crank more than 5 sec. Just space it in between. After doing that for about 20 times out everything back together and crank it and it will start. It will take several trues but believe it will!!This is a problem many mechanics can't figure out. Only comes by from experience.

And where did you come up with that conclusion with the info given? That's about the wildest guess I ever heard.
