engine stalls after start Sign In

hey everyone. i looked around and didn't find anything that matches my problem.

i've got a 2002 dodge dakota with a 4.7l v8. this morning, it was really hard to turn over, but it finally did. once it was started, however, it immediately stalled. i thought maybe it was cold, so i started it again and kept my foot on the gas for a minute or two, and when i took my foot off, the idle dropped completely out and the engine stalled again. any ideas?

Re: engine stalls after start Sign In

when you say it was really hard to turn over, did it crank real slow?????
after the second stall did it restart/or crank over...?
just asking , many people have a different meaning for turn over......to technicians/mechanics,turn over means engine actually cranking but not starting....i have seen here and on other boards were people say not turning over but mean cranks but wou't start???
no disrespect, just trying to help....not goin' throw out ideas until i'm sure i understand the problem...post backUnimpressed

Good points jimn. Guess we need to post cranking and turning over and starting differences. As a SWAG, if the battery is low, that will be your problem. Have the battery tested first. If it has low voltage or amperage, replace the battery. Dodges are real finiky about battery voltage to keep it running at idle. If battery is OK, may be idle speed control, engine coolant temp sensor, air temp sensor, air leak in the induction system. You get the point. There are a lot of different thingd that can cause your problem. I chose battery due to the way you posed your question. Was slow but finally started. Good luck.

Re: engine stalls after start Sign In

i meant turnover as in the engine actually cranking. at first it seemed like the starter or battery was dead, and then it slowly got up to cranking speed. the second time it was still hard to turnover, but it did start quicker. the third time it got better again, but still stalled.

i don't have any means i can think of for testing the battery except for taking it in to get looked at, and i might just buy a new one. it's been 5 years with this one.

My two cents: Don't waste your time on a five year old battery. Just toss it now as even if that isn't the whole problem it will rule that out and it's time anyway,

good points.....
most people tend to read into things in todays times because of the complexity of the vehicles electronics and tend to forget the basics.....
i agree with tom-5 years on a battery is enough.....at least your getting a warning...most times when a battery fails you don't even get a warning.
