engine running hot Sign In

1997 Buick Riviera with 114,000 miles. Just recently the enginge temp gage will imediately go to 200 degrees while driving and will go into the red wihile stopped for a few minutes. This will happen with or without the ac on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Do you hear your radiator cooling fan kick on?
If it only over heats sitting still, that would be the first thing i would check.

Check coolant level, Operation of fans, Blockage of radiator (plugged with dirt, road tar etc..). check for flow issues one hose hot one cold when idle in park. If that all checks out pressure test and chemical test for possible headgasket issues.
