i have a 97 chevy astro van i was driving and the van died but when it did it sounded like a belt broke but i checked all the belts are in tacked so i called a tow truck and he came out he asked whats wrong i told him im not sure so he said turn it over so i did and it makes a loud knocking noise as you are turning it over so he said it could of jumped time i said ok so the next day i took everything off to find the timinig chain in tack so i had a friend turn the key so i could hear where the problem is coming from so he turned the key and nothing moved i could hear the starter but the crankshaft did not move then he did it again and nothing then i said again and he did and thhen the chain and everything turned but made a loud knock noise again.so im really lost on what it could be and i am wondering should the crankshaft have play in it by that i mean i can move it back and fourth and it makes a clicking noise everyone is saying my crankshaft is probably snapped or ist it possible it is moving because the timing chain is not tight on there please help really in need of an answer as soon as possible

To start with you need to take a closer look at the lower timing gear to determine if that gear is tuning but not turning the chain. If you can verify that the crank is not turning at all, then you either have a broken crankshaft or a broken flywheel. If it's an auto trans, a broken flywheel is a real possibility.

yes it does turn so is it possible it may need a new chain becuase it is pretty loose

If the crank gear is turning then yes, you definitely need a new chain and gears.

the thing im having a hard time with is i can pull the crank back and fourth is it suppose to move like that i have people all day saying it should not move and i have a snapped crank im so confused

A real small amount or movement would be normal. If the crank pulley is turning steadily, it's not likely broken.

If the bottom pulley turns without the top one, there is no question the chain is bad.
If you had any plastic teeth on the gear, your going to have to drop the oil pan and get all the pieces out or it will plug up the oil pick up.

ok now im really confused because when the van is turned over both the top and bottom turn so your saying the chain is still good

Why don't you post back when you know for sure what it is or isn't doing. Line up the timing marks and make sure it's still in time also.

Wonder if there are teeth off the flywheel or maybe the starter? If starter works and nothing moves-------

here is my problem now i took the timinig chain off and i can take a socket and move the cam it moves all the way around now i tried turning the crankshaft it will move a little one way and stop then i turn it the other way and it moves a little and stops but it will not do a complete turn and it moves back and fourth i think to much but im not sure

Your going to have to start inspecting things carefully starting at the starter and flywheel. Remove the inspection cover so you can clearly see the flywheel. Now put a socket on the front crankshaft bolt and move the crank slightly in both directions watching closely to see if the flywheel mirrors every move. If it doesn't then try to look up behind the flywheel to see if it's broken or not. Make sure none of the converter bolts have loosened up enough to be hitting the block either.

Rob; Don't try turning the crank without the chain and gears aligned. Use the pic I sent you to line up the gears properly. Since this died while it was running, I don't see how the flex-plate/starter is an issue unless it/they were damaged after the fact.
