Hi, I have a 1973 360 dodge motorhome that is overheating at speeds over 55 mph, cools off when you slow down to 45mph and below, what do you think. I have put a new water pump and new timing gears and chain and flushed out the radiator and replaced the hormonic balancer(that was a different problem) also there is a hesitation (with a lot of coughing and sputtering) on take off, but it runs good when you get past that. I dont know if the two problems are related but could you give me some ideas on both problems.
thank you very much

Hi again,

This smacks of a radiator that can't do the intended job anymore. It could be a problem with airflow from fan clutch, electric extra fans if equipped, or rare but a thermostat that can't open all the way. Generally at speed airflow is at it's best but load on engine is high also and produces more heat. Radiator shops are good at this stuff and can acid boil out a usable radiator better than a regular flush. It obviously needs the maximum possible cooling ability in its application.

If the radiator has some years on it you can count on its ability to be reduced. New, proper replacement would be best or a rad shop can recore it with the maximum heat transferring core if tanks are still in good shape. If you can see in the radiator as to how the tubes look just from thru the cap you would have an idea of its condition. It would be cheap to just toss the thermostat to rule it out even if it's fairly new and a fan clutch does lose its ability year by year even when they look good time takes a toll on them.

Check out the radiator as that is what I think is causing the problem. Certainly don't let it overheat and cause more problems,

T
