engine light on, power steering light on, speedometer isnt working and car wont shift Sign In

Hello I have a 2006 Saturn Ion 67k miles. I was driving at about 20 mph and the powersteering light came on (it became noticably harder to turn). When I restarted the car I noticed the engine light was on and the speedometer wasn't working. As I was driving home I notice theh car wouldn't shift, I was going about 40mph and hitting 4.5 RPM. Anyone have any theories on what can be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm? First make sure PS fluid is properly filled and belt is on and feels tight enough. If low or a belt problem find out why. If real noisy consider not driving it and don't over rev if sticking/staying in lower gear to get that done.

With "engine light" on there are hard codes waiting to be read and get that done as a guide to where to go next. It's possible a couple things are going on and not just one causing all these symptoms but a maybe and the code(s) will help with this,

Thanks for the info. I checked the ps fluid and belt and it looks good. It's not nosiy at all but it appears to be stuck in what im guess is 2nd gear because I can go about 35-40 mph. There is also a clicking noise when I brake or switch the stick to park/reverse/drive. I can only assume this clicking noise is it switching from 2nd to neutral and skipping first. I also don't coast when im in drive and stopped. The car also decelerates a little faster than perviously before. Is it possible that it has something to do with a speed sensor (Perhaps my car is in a safe type of mode because it doesn't know its own speed?) Any thoughts on this matter would help. Thanks again!!

I'm doing too much guessing for this. It may need a speed sensor to tell the computer how fast it's going as part of when to shift or this probably uses a BCM (body control module) too so code readings are needed as said.

PS? Perhaps it's designed to reduce assist a lot if just traveling down the road or highway straight ahead and saves some energy but give it back as needed - IDK. Other vehicle for years have had variable power assist. Hope the others are watching with more ideas but still will want codes read no doubt,

Thanks so much for all the help. Well I got the code reading and it is U0101 (not communication with the transmition control module). Any ideas if there is a way to trouble shoot this myself (changing fuses, checking wiring...). The guy I brought it to at the shop said he didn't deal with electronics. These problems did start in 102 degree weather after I was stuck at a stop light idling for about 10 minutes. Any ideas would be awful helpful before I bring it in for what will be a very expensive repair I'm assuming.

Well what you need to do is get it on a scanner see if it's hard code for no communication with TCM.. If communication is ok, i would watch VSS (vechical Speed Sensor) if equipped some vechicals use wheel speed sensors. Transmission won't shift properly if it dosen't know how fast the car is going. If there is no communication they will have to follow pin-point tests and figure out if its wiring or module.
