engine dies at low rpms Sign In

hi I have a 2001 pontiac aztek that is having issues. Its a 6 cyl. and has 98000 miles on it. First of all we've had to rig up a wire directly to the starter and it starts with a push button when you turn the key to the on position but my problem is that the engine dies out when the rpm's go down to 1000, this can be either when slowing down for a light, stop sign and just slowing down to turn. It also did it once while going up a hill in town because the rpm's had dropped to 1000. The engine will start right up with no problem but now I have to watch the rpm's and drive 2 footed so if I need to slow down I can work the gas and brakes and keep the rpm's up. Everything else seems to be working at the moment and this problem didnt happen when my son took the vehicle so it seems like its an intermitten issue right now. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks Barb

Re: engine dies at low rpms Sign In

Is this to say it won't turn starter by the key? Could have two issues going on??

Need to know that and once running it has the intermittent stall even from 1,000 which is higher than it would be at idle in drive.

OK: There's something lurking and a code reading (there should be one waiting) would help. Get a print out and #s and what it means but don't necessarily buy anything yet. Post results.

Autozone and several parts outlets are reading codes for free - a way to sell parts of course but hold off for suggestions as they can be misleading. By the time a "check or service engine soon light" stays lit there's definitely a code to be read. Others have a grace period before a light but computer is watching!

Since intermittent you just know it won't misbehave in front of anyone (THIS IS LAWCrazy) but hope that the puter can recall something,

T

no it doesnt start with the key and thats why we have had to rig it up. Didnt have the money to take it to the garage. I will take it to Advance Auto or Autozone and have them run a check on it and I will post the results. I sure hope its an easy fix. Thanks

Re: 01 Pontiac Aztek engine dies at low rpms Sign In

OK: Got that much so far. Now would like to know if the by-passing the key to get the starter to turn is just triggering it as the key would normally do or a hard jump by-passing the solenoid altogether?

The issue is if by key it can't make the solenoid activate the starter then the items normally empowered by the ignition might not be getting proper current even though it runs. It matters as now I'm thinking the ignition switch is a problem which could (more likely) cause two issues with one problem but anything is possible.

I'll try to find the pic of the starter.......... Got it! That's the back of solenoid on top of starter,

Hope that shows? The uppermost copper/larger terminal should go directly to battery and the similar size one direct to starter motor. The smaller silverish colored wire is the trigger wire terminal which if given voltage will cause the solenoid to activate the connection to run the starter and other wiring there is empowered just wire is triggered possible for other needed reasons. That would be possible to tell the puter that it's just started and do this or that for a few seconds.

So, which one are you jumping?

That, and does this vehicle use a theft control of any type, chip in key or original or aftermarket stuff?

This info will help us help you in what is likely,

T
