I have a 1987 Chrysler 5th Ave. Someone put dirt in my gas tank. What can be done to fix this problem and approximately how much will it cost? Thanks Frank

Oh my - idiots walk among us - damn. No telling how much I guess so changing fuel filter a few times may do. If worse - gas tank out and cleaned including new or cleaned "sock" where it picks up fuel. Sorry that happened, T

The whole fuel system will need to flushed and a new fuel filter installed. Do not run the vehicle like this cause it could make bigger problems. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

Ya - gotta agree with Mr. Scotty not to drive this as there's really no telling what's in it. At the age if in good shape I think about a new tank. Just checked - $124 with new O rings for sending unit, T

Thanks for agreeing! But think if all that got into injectors and and everything, big time money$$$$ there! Fuel filters are only so good if you ask me. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

So true with fuel filters: Do we really know? I always buy NAPA Gold (which is a Wix) and if nothing else they don't rust out so fast and some will. I think this uses a carb and pricey too if look up is correct. Still - who needs junk in there. I know super fine rust mud can get to them - used to use a magnet to get it out! Late carbs were tough to keep running well and surely injectors wouldn't be happy either, Tom

Thanks for all the response. I took some advice and bought a new tank and flushed the system and so far things are back to normal. The car was in great shape and I did not drive far when I realized the problem. She only has 69586 original miles. Thanks a lot Frank

Great! Glad the problem is fixed. I would buy a locking gas cap to keep this from happening again. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

rnman777: If this nice an old car you did the right thing. Hope no dirt made it to carb or a pretty basic mechanical fuel pump. One would hope a fuel filter would stop particles too big to get thru it that wouldn't pass thru carb. Was this vandalism or just some kid playing? Pain but a locking cap would be in order as Mr. Scotty suggested. At least this carb should be strait forward to dismantle, clean, new gaskets and needle valve. May have idle adjustment screw covers that can be removed - late carbs didn't want folks messing with idle mixture but screws were there and carb kits used to (retired a while now) have good instructions on defeating a plug put over them. Keep same adjustment but needed to remove for cleaning or blowing out junk. Hope its done and you can forget it now. Stinks but might need some special tools for one. Did more GM carbs back when and they would use what's called a "clutch" head needle valve which sockets for are still out there. I'll say it now but hope not needed. With those, count how many turns in till bottomed out and put back to same spot when done. You'll know soon if more is needed but sounds good so far. T
