delay w/ acceleration

Hey guys, 1996, VW Jetta GLS, engine size ?, 167k So, I've had this car only a few months and am finding a whole bunch of fun things out about it. My most pressing issue for today - I noticed that there is a delay in acceleration 2-3 sec after coming to a stop. It has been becoming more obvious and then today the car just keeled. I was stopped @ a light, went through it, got up to ~ 30k, everything stopped. It turned over but wouldn't start again. No engine lights indicating problem. I'd really appreciate any idea's as to why, why, WHY DEAR GOD I have such problems! Then if you could, please address this issue with my car. Thanks - H

Is this manual or automatic transmission, also are you trying to say that your car wont accelerate from a stop? GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012

Just to add: Engine warning lights wont mean much if it isn't starting at all so forget that. A code reading might help. If it was running fine recently a compression check of even one or two cylinders might show a problem. At the miles I'd be thinking valve timing with the symptoms leading up to this, T

It is automatic, and yeah, it doesn't want to accelerate from a stop.
