cruise control kills motor ?????

cruise control kills motor ????? Sign In

1999 blazer 4.3, 6cyl, Auto tran & 4 wheel drive.

The other day I was on the highway and i had the cruise control set at 70 and I came up on to some vehicles that were going slower so i taped the braked pedal to disengage the cruise control and it did disengage and after i passed the vehicles I pushed the RESUME button on the cruise control to bring me back to 70 automatically and I was doing around 65 when I pushed the RESUME button and as soon as I pushed the button instead of it bringing it back to 70 slowly like it usually did before this time it pushed the throttle completly down and i heard the engine rev up very high and I saw the tach go right into the red and I quickly hit the button and the brakes to disengage the cruise control but it didn't disenage and by the time I went to shut the key off I heard a started to hear a loud rapping noise coming from the engine and then the cruise finally disenaged and I tried to give it some gas and I had no power. I was trying to get to the right shoulder of the highway and i also noticed that there was hardly any oil pressure on the gauge so i quicly shut the engine off and coated to the shoulder and came to a stop. After about 10 minutes I turned the motor over to see if it would and it had a very hard time turning over and it did not start. I only did this for about 2 seconds. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have happened inside the motor?

Guess: Engine was free without trans in gear, traction/ice/snow, or blown trans and over revved causing major engine damage. I can't say why cruise didn't quit. Perhaps engine throttle plain stuck at near wide open??

The trans was in gear at the time because we took off really quick. we took off like i had pushed the pedal all the way to the floor and then some. Something major must have broke inside engine. The loud rapping noise from the engine did not sound good at all.

A guess at the weak link in an engine overreved with the design of this one is intake valves collided with the pistons as the valve springs couldn't get them out of the way fast enough. It'll take some testing to see how extensive and just what happened but possibly just that - can't know for sure. Bummer!

If the valves did collide with the pistons what kind of repair work would need to be done to fix that.

Possible damage......



That pic show hole in piston (real bad!)



That's a bent valve



That's both the piston and a bent rod!



That shows damage to a cylinder wall.

So...... Any of the above or combinations could have happened. It needs to be checked out professionally for a diagnosis before giving up on the engine as a whole!

You noted low oil pressure which would be real bad if engine was still running when that was observed but it might have been in the course of not running. Low oil pressure would mean (if was running) a serious breakdown of bearings, rapid oil loss internal or externally.

It's really hard to say from here. Needs hands on diag to make the call along with history on this engine up till this.

IF this is rendered more costly to repair than replace you still have options. Whole used motors (my choice for a 10 year old vehicle) or whole rebuilt engine which still will need parts from your old one.

If you could know it only bent valves they could be replaced and head(s) refinished if head(s) didn't fracture themselves. If a cylinder wall was marred I'd toss that engine. That can usually be seen thru a spark plug hole with a scope.

This really needs a professional appraisal and a shop that can handle this work. You'll probably find techs that like and dislike dealing with used parts. A lot depends on the quality of a local salvage yard and their ability to determine good whole engines to sell.
