cold start/run rough on 89 accord Sign In

1989 Honda Accord 2.0L 149000 miles

my Honda has serious problems on cold mornings. trying to drive it when it's cold is nuts, you have to keep reeving the engine when stopped or it will stall pretty much every time. I was told it was the spark plugs so i replaced them but i still have the same problem. I have no idea what is causing this and it's getting colder and worse. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Is it running on all cylinders?

Is the check engine light coming on?

If you have a cylinder missing when it's cold, then that's what you have to resolve first. Find out which cylinders and why.

Might want to remove the air cleaner and see if the choke plate closes when you pump the gas pedal once when the engine is cold. The choke is controlled by a bi-metal spring electrically heated choke cover. The choke also set the fast idle cam, so the engine idles faster when the choke plate is closed.

While you are in there check all your vaccum hoses. If you have a vacuum leak, it will run bad and stall at idle.

If the choke is closed when you pull the air cleaner off, start the engine and watch the choke plate. There is a choke pull off that is vacuum operated to pull the choke plate open a little bit as the engine starts. If you don't see the choke open a little bit during starting, the choke pull off might be bad.
