chevy s10 ect problem? Sign In

I recently had a new radiator installed by a local repair shop. Right after this, I started having 2 problems: The truck would have trouble starting (would act like it's flooding out) but then would always start. The second problem is that the radiator fan would continue to run after the truck was turned off. I took it back to the shop and he said he couldn't find anything wrong. After much research I think it might be a bad engine coolant temperature sensor.

If I'm right, my real questions is: Is this something that would have been moved, disconnected, or in any sense of the word (tampered with) during the installation of the new radiator. I don;t think its a coincidence that the problems started right after he installed a new radiator (which had a leak)

There are a couple of problems with your theory. If they were to blame here, it would likely be because something was left disconnected or wires were damaged. The problem with that theory is that when the sensor is unplugged or open circuit, the fan defaults to on all the time. It is possible for the sensor to just fail and read incorrectly and cause your issues though. You really need a scan tool to be ab le to read the sensor data that the computer is seeing.

could you tell me if a bad ect sensor is consistant with the problems I'm having? (throws too much gas when starting; and fan runs after truck is turned off). the fan runs about 30-45 seconds after I turn the truck off

Sure, it's possible along with 100 other things. You would most likely have a check engine light on if that were the case. You need to use a scan tool to diagnose this.

well, my check engine light has been on 3 years. - scan says it's secondary air po440, and po410 emmission. but neither code says anything about the ECT. OBD II tester- actron. the service engine light has been an ongoing issue for years.

Have you checked the codes since this problem started?

but again- the existing problem with startup and fan, started immediately after the new radiator install (about 8 days ago)

If you have a scan tool that can read data, then check the coolant temp. That's how your going to find out. You can test the resistance of the sensor but that won't tell you anything about the rest of the circuit.

Here is the chart for checking the resistance of the sensor.
