i have a 91 chevy s-10 with a 4.3L v6 automatic. sometimes it starts fine but other times it turns over and acts like its going to start until i let off the ignition. to me it doesn't sound like it is getting enough gas.

You pretty much answered your own question. has the fuel filter been changed? could be clogged. you also described one of the classic symptoms of a bad(or going bad) ignition switch (or on a gm product - a mis-adjusted switch).
is it out of gas?
