car wont start when engine is warm or in the cold weather Sign In

I have a 96 plymouth breeze and over the winter it got to 20 below and my car would not start. I finally had it jumped and drove the car that day but my check engine light turned on. I had a hard time starting it ever since. When it is under 20 degrees Fahrenheit the car needs the charger on it or needs to be jumped and after the car has warmed up completely it wont start until it has cooled back down. The Check engine light is on most or the time but not all time. When it is on it reads the safety neutral switch is stuck in gear/or park. I aslo have but a new battery and a starter in since this problem occurred. Will a bad switch cause the issues Im having? Or is it possible to be something else? Thank you.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

My dad has a code reader and when the light is on the code reader tells me a code and the description says " Safety Neutral Switch is stuck in gear or park".. Advance or autozone will give me a different code?

That's a transmission issue and won't prevent the car from starting as long as the starter is working properly. If jumper cables get the car started, then you're still dealing with a battery or connection issue.
