car wont keep running

1984 buick century 3.0 6 cyl 90,000 mi. car got hot 3 times in 2 days on interstate- put on radiator fan motor,took thermostat out got 90 miles going home got hot.Motor starts runs good for no longer than 1 minute slowly dies-no water in oil,when running sounds good BUT always dies--is there a cutoff switch? Looked in trunk and glove box cant find one- The OIL/CHOKE light stays on while running HELP???????????????

civilwar; No, no magic 'cutoff' switch. The oil/choke light might be the clue, though. If the choke isn't getting hot, could be causing a 'flooding' condition. I would be more concerned with the overheating, though. Taking the thermostat out is not a good idea. The engine must reach 'temperature' for the computer to go into 'closed loop operation', as well as the choke to open. If the engine is overheating while driving on the interstate, that would rule out the electrical cooling fan. Head gasket leaking hot exhaust gasses into cooling system? Lack of thermostat not allowing coolant to cool between 'cycles'? Plugged radiator? Some of the older GM's would shut off fuel if the oil pressure dropped below a pre-determined spec. So many possibilities, here. Loren SW Washington
